modorrra 2003 laura palmer   I  txuma & uxeta labrit September 25-28, erribera market, bilbo MODORRA was set up as an alternative fashion catwalk to display both Basque and foreign designers' work. Modorrra is there to counteract the lack of openings for new Basque fashions and young designers. It helps them towards professionalism and offers the chance of reaching a wider audience. They also try to involve the designers in our everyday life by using different public places as the settings for their exhibitions.

This first edition featured the work of fifteen designers and Argentina was the star foreign guest this year. As well as that, 35 different designers were spread out amongst the different stalls in the market in between the fruit and veg, where they had their collections on show and sale. The fashion-shows put on have been quite expressive and central to the whole event. One of the outstanding features that afford Modorrra its originality has been the wonderfully crafted choreography and the interpretation of the clothes by non-professional models and dancers. One of the important aims behind Modorrra is in some way to come up with new styles and expressions that don't follow the constant waves of imposed tendencies and imagery. There were plenty of different and varied styles on display. One example of this was Estibaliz Corral's “las grupis van al cielo” (“groupies go to heaven”) where models interact with a hardcore band as they play live. Another mention goes to Igor Gorostiza's sculptural softness. So, Modorrra’s debut has been and gone. More Modorrra next year.
