bertsolari: and the word became film    As it’s about bertsolaritza, words are the main characters in the film that Txintxua Films has produced over the last three years. But they’re not the only characters. In the same way that bertsolaris turn the storms of words in their heads into bertsos before they sing them, Asier Altuna has skilfully managed to turn the stacks of words around bertsolaritza into images. People who aren’t bertsolaritza fans will be able to see beyond the clichés to a rich, varied world; those who are will be able to see the world they know with new eyes. The opening night will be at Donostia Zinemaldia. After that, it’ll be shown at cinemas. How can I explain
what bertsolaritza is?
If the audience is a beach
and the poems waves,
each bertsolari needs
to choose whether
it’s time to surf or
to dive under.

The scene is a misty,
darkened cliff
that we dream of vaulting over
with a pole of words.
In a brilliant performance
every mistake is a stumble,
but even if we fall,
we will try vaulting again!

The trodden path
is a new path,
as we retrace our steps,
step by step.
Are bertsolaris
going backwards
or is the world going
the wrong way round?
