sacamantecas nuen aita

aitor arana. txalaparta

We have heard the name Sacamantecas (a “Bogeyman”-type character used to frighten children) many times but we don’t know if it is a legend or whether the figure really existed or not. This book clears up any doubts we may have had. Each retelling of a Sacamantecas murder is similar to a stabbing: slicing straight in to the bone. Using real life as a starting point, Aitor Arana adds fiction as he moves the story along by using Sacamantecas’s daughter to add to the official version by narrating first-hand her own experience of her father. An entertaining book that is quickly and easily read.

Three stories about relationships, or more rightfully, three stories from different places make up Xabier Etxeberria’s latest book. A mother-daughter relationship, the relationship between two sisters and finally the relationship between a couple are three of the legs to this particular table. The fourth is made up of the lies, secrets, silences and betrayals in the stories. As the book states “the truth has many faces, and so too does the lie. And sometimes, the lie is a one of those faces shown by the truth.”

tmeo 25 urte...

Born in Irunea and raised in Gasteiz, this fanzine’s logo, somebody’s face being pissed on, is the most accurate description of what it has been doing for the last 25 years. Numerous local and not-so-local comic artists have found the space to express themselves freely in Tmeo. They show respect to absolutely nothing or no-one, precisely because of the respect they have for themselves and their readers. Nobody is safe within the pages of Tmeo. Tmeo is the last stronghold of the resistance. Do yourself a favour and become a fan of the “golden shower.”

Sometimes we find great little treasures in the most unsuspecting places. This one tells the story of a little hedgehog. There are no words, just simple clear illustrations and the slow rhythm of the hedgehog in this minimalist and suggestive tale. The different elements that appear throughout the story are snagged on the hedgehog’s spikes, in the same way our eyes are trapped by this unfolding cardboard story. Is there still anybody who believes that luxury must be expensive?
