the baldian 35: Fernando Lamas
Fernando Lamas y de Santos was born in Buenos Aires in 1915.
He became a well-known actor in Argentina and in 1951 went to Hollywood to play “latin-lover” roles in his films there.
Ever since, the archetypical Latin playboy has been based on Fernando Lamas’ image and acting.
He married four times and had three children. One of those is the famous Lorenzo Lamas “el rey de las camas”.
He met his fourth, and last, wife, the actress and great swimmer Esther Williams, in the first film he directed, Magic Fountain.
The last films he directed included The Violent Ones, as well as many TV series such as Mannix, Starsky and Hutch and, of course, Falcon Crest.
When appearing on Johnny Carson’s popular television show, he responded to his host’s teasing of his accent with the followin g put down: “When a person has an accent, it means he can speak one more language than you”.
He died at the age of 67 and his close fishing-friend Jonathon Goldsmith scattered his ashes from the boat both of them had used to sail and fish from.
