Florence Foster Jenkins
Florence Foster Jenkins was born in Pennsylvania in the year 1868.
From a very early age she wanted to study music.
Though her father was rich, he frowned upon his daughter’s vocation.
Florence, however, was set on a musical future, so while still very young, she married scientist Frank Thornton Jenkins.
She quickly divorced him and began to work as a pianist and teacher. Her father died in 1909 and she came into a handsome inheritance. It was then she decided she would make her dreams come true and become and opera singer.
The Verdi Club opened in New York and hosted song
recitals. When her mother died, she then became one of the ‘officially’ wealthy in the city.
Try as she might, she was just not singer material. Nevertheless, Florence refused to leave. Her appearances soon became famous, but not for musical reasons.
She made several recordings and released some records. You can listen to this diva’s “melodious” harmonies on the internet.
The dresses she wore during her performances she made herself, and, according to critics at the time, they were on a par with her singing.
On the 25th of October, 1944, she performed at the
Carnegie Hall. Tickets sold out as soon as they went on sale.
The great Florence Foster Jenkins, having fulfilled her dreams, died one month later at the age of 76.
