Leo is the official name of the MGM lion.
In 1916, Howard Dietz, soldier and head of advertising at Metro designed the logo. He based it on the Columbia University Football team’s “Roar, Lion, Roar”.
In 1924, Goldwyn and Louis B. Mayer merged with Metro and
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was born. The lion became the symbol of this dream factory.
The first lion was
Slats. He was brought fro Sudan to the USA. The trip was fraught with accidents; the plane had a slight crash, a train he was travelling on collided with another and there was also a boat that sunk. It just goes to show that a cat truly does have nine lives.
Mayer himself filmed
Leo’s famous roar. There was no sound at first. It was later added in 1928.
The lion was chauffer-driven to premiers in its own car. The keepers looking after the lion used to hand out his autographs to waiting fans. As happens with everybody else in Hollywood, he was eventually forgotten about and ended his days in a home for animals.
After
Slats, lions named
Jackie,
Tanner or
Jackie II took over.
