Dorkbot is a place for engineers, inventors, artists and basically any Joe Soap from the four corners of the planet to get together, show each other and talk about their ideas, inventions and creations. Apart from the latest and hottest new gadgets, Dorbot also plays host to “low intensity” products and devices, and it’s this widespread of gadgetry on show that actually makes Dorkbot charming. Stuff to override videogame consoles, courses on how to make sex toys, homemade scanners, remote-control toasters...
The project first came about in New York at the start of 2001. An electronics whiz kid by the name of Douglas Repetto got the whole thing rolling with a little help from Columbia University material. You can find Dorkbot spots on four continents. Dorkbot basically works as a non commercial franchise. Anybody can start up a Dorkbot, there’s only one condition: you have to use the slogan people doing strange things with electricity.
