fugu roulette
The Fugu fish (Fugu rubripes), also known as a Puffer Fish or Blowfish, has two basic defence mechanisms. One of the mechanisms used to scare off its enemies is to puff itself up into a balloon-like ball. This method of defence is quite successful more often than not, but our fish friend is also victorious in defeat. This leads us to the second form. The fugu’s body is stuffed brimful with poisonous glands. When eaten, it’s death turns into vengeance as it kills the eater.
If you want to eat fugu in Japan, you have to go to a specially certified restaurant. Chefs spend up to ten years studying the fugu’s anatomy so as not to burst even one of those poison glands. If one those little venomous bags goes "pop", the whole fish becomes an infected mortal morsel. If the tetrodotoxin poison gets into your digestive system, there’s a 60% chance that this will be your version of the last supper. The Japanese love the taste and texture of the fugu, but they love the idea of mixing gastronomy and death ever more. Fugu Roulette is not that dangerous all the same. Deaths by fugu are few and far between. All the same, if you do happen to visit a fugu restaurant, bear in mind that the Japs are not overly fond of foreigners (gainjin)...
