Those of us who use the internet will, every now and again, get e-mail ads from people we don’t know. This junk mail, delivered in absolutely enormous quantities, has become known as spam all over this little green planet of ours.To find out where the name spam comes from, you have to go as far back as the year 1926, right back to the year when American food manufacturers Hornel started selling tinned Spam (Spiced Ham). Spam was a huge success because it was a meat product that didn’t need refrigeration. American soldiers ate nothing else during WWII and you would always be able to find a can of Spam in any upper, middle or lower class Yank home. It was so successful that nowadays any cheap meat sold in a tin goes under the name of Spam and a simple analogy was all it took for junk mail to end up being baptised with the same name.
Strange as it may seem, not that many people actually send spam. A few companies and individuals are those responsible for stuffing all the computers in the world with junk ads. It’s almost impossible to locate these spam senders constantly in motion because almost any computer or server can send off massive amounts of spam. Spam senders can send out about a million e-mails for less than 3 euro. It’s absolutely impossible to find a cheaper form of publicity anywhere else. Most of us don’t pay too much attention to spam but those in charge at the multinationals have done their sums and reached the conclusion that only the time taken to open this spam costs thousands of millions of Euro every year.
Well, all those multinational researchers who calculate the relation between time and profits can go and, excuse the French, fuck right off with themselves! We all lose time and dignity working for the multinationals and nobody looks into the effects it has on us!
