Ready to face up to a brilliant future. That is how the main characters on this ceramic mosaic-mural appear. Miners, astronauts, scientists, farmers and sports players, all proud on the walls of different Soviet buildings. And yet these murals, on which the influence of avant-guard Russian artists is so clear, are about to disappear. Ukrainian photographer Vladimir Shipotilnikov wanted to record them in images before they were completely destroyed: “They tell us about the great hope and curiosity of the Soviet period. Nobody’s interested in them nowadays. In these photos I want to show that utopia did exist in the past. As with the murals, before that utopia disappears completely.¨
