stray cats: rocking against the current uxeta labrit   Stray Cats was formed in 1979, right at the time when the rockabilly movement was at its end. Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom met each other at school in Massapequa, a town in New York. As soon as they met, they began to get together to practice songs such as Eddie Cochran, Bill Haley and his Coments and Gene Vincent. As nobody cared too much about them in their hometown or NY, the three youngsters brought their instruments and began playing in England, at different bars and auditoriums. Paradoxically, they were successful in England, with their American music style (it happened the same to Hendrix with his electric blues).
At the 80s, even though things such as synthesizers, key guitars, electronic drums, hair-styles out of hair sprays that destroy the ozone layer and artificial shoulders were on fashion, Stray Cats maintained their old style. And still, they kept appearing on TV doing play back, and purist fans of 50s rock did not like them too much. And precisely that is why Stray Cats were so especial. Due to their nomadic trajectory, they did not match the midwestern American rockabilly style played by white conservative backward people. They were urban, they had tatoos all over their arms, like real seamen, they played at docks all over the world. They only needed a huge bass, small drums and a guitar to define their music: direct, easy to dance and elegant.
They have always given forcefull and wild concerts. They show that music is made to have fun. In 1984, each cat took its own path. Later on they have gotten together to publish albums and give spare concerts here and there. However, each of them has focused on their solitary careers; thus, it is clear that their first four albums were the best. In the past 20 years, they have published new works and albums, and we won´t criticize such decision, because they have maintained a good quality, and what the hell! Because rockers do also have to pay mortgages.
