towels, summer conquers and memories uxeta labrit   I  kosmikar Even though it’s something that we’ve used all our lives, the world of fashion has paid very little attention to the towel. Any self respecting person should know what the towel is really worth. It’s just not on to splash out half your monthly wages on the latest clothes and accessories and then head off to the beach with a rag. Our towel should match our bathing costumes and whatever shade our skin is at any given moment. People shouldn’t be allowed to have check towels if they’re wearing a stripped swimsuit. It’s just not on. You see... merely obeying the words of the song by Puturru de Fuá “don’t forget your towel when you go to the beach” is not enough. People have to learn how to choose a towel. If we’re gonna be unusual when it comes to fashion, we’d better be coherently unusual.
We’ve always taken along a whole array of objects on our trips to the beach (buckets, spades, cards, walkmans, I-pods...) but the towel is always number one on our list. These towels are reservoirs of memories. They conquer little patches of grass and sand and bear witness to everything we do. There are millions of different towels. They are of different race, origin and colour. You don’t have to look any further than the amazing collections brought to beaches in Lapurdi, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia by the hordes of Navarrese invaders. They look like walking towel museums. It certainly seems that the towel is a valued family heirloom passed on from generation to generation by the Basques.
