bonsai banzai    We really fall for some of the clichés about Japan at times... their respect for tradition, education, self-control, cherry trees blossoming in Spring... It’s as if we were to think that all Basques were rosycheeked doll like figures with beards (some of us here still try to sell that image). Sometimes, however, clichés and the latest trends come together with surprisingly strange results.
We met a member of Bosai Banzai in small bar in Tokyo full of Columbian hookers dressed in geishas and small ugly types wearing new broadbacked suits. BB, Bonsai Banzai, a Liberation Front dedicated to the cause of freeing our tortured little tree friends.
Our "friend" described the liberation philosophy that moves the BB. Our "connection" explained that the group is made up of people from all walks of life and includes biologists and botanists. The work carried out by the latter is really important to the cause because, seemingly, after years of torture and pruning, lots of our little bonsais suffer the equivalent of the Stockholm Syndrome. The freed plants need special care and attention once they have been replanted in the mountains. Acts of bonsai liberation are simple enough. The group, dressed as ninjas, break into gardens and glasshouses and take the bonsais. Dozens of these dwarfish trees have been rescued and replanted in the mountains. As our ninja freedom fighter explained to us, lots of the members of the group are really convinced that the Bonsai Banzai philosophy is where it’s at. Alas, they’re just a bunch of sad veggies in our ninja’s words. Our ninja is only in it for the crack. Breaking into gardens, nurseries and glasshouses is akin to a risk sport. The adrenaline buzz and all that. Sometimes you just have to be a bastard so a city like Tokyo doesn’t swallow you whole.
We’ve already formed the BBBB. The Basque Bonsai Banzai Branch (unpruned of course), so watch yourself and hide that little friend of ours that you play the torturer with... because none of us are vegetarians and we really know where we’re coming from...
