Labitaciones etxeberria kooperativa   The Labitaciones laboratory project was set up as a minimum two-year project in Arteleku to look into the problems surrounding housing. It was organised by the Etxeberria Cooperative, who having made a public appeal, managed to bring together artists, anthropologists, designers, architects and people from many other different walks of life to work on the idea. After three months of analysis, the diagnosis of what we have closest to home is a very gloomy one indeed. There exist certain inertias behind the homogenisation the housing being offered to us.
What laboratory aims to make clear is there are many ways of going about and settling on a project to construct a house. Housing must be understood as a creator of communities that cannot be removed from the surroundings where it stands. But the idea of this scale ( a small one, not monumental) demands public land planning that will be dynamically innovative and motivated by what is really necessary.
There may be many different geographical factors in this land of ours, new social structures, emergency situations (both individual and collective) or other more long-lasting factors and if we join them to other difficult attitudes, they might be other ways of tackling the subject of housing. There are tools that help in doing the building yourself, ownership (not purchasing), and the use of abandoned buildings. Meagre budgets are also a source of fulfilling what we're looking for.
Once the work of analysing and diagnosis is over, there are workshops programmed (from Sep 15 - 26) to work on the ideas that have come up. This workshops will be held by Parisian architect Anne Lacaton and the architect Santiago Cirugeda from Seville. With their help we hope to start developing some quick projects for the city or its surroundings...
